English
Alpine Championships 2009 – Bormio
Sunday 15th February 2009
FIS Slalom
The day dawned clear and cold and looked a perfect day for
racing. The mountains were standing out against a deep blue sky and conditions
looked excellent for a day night slalom race. The sky stayed clear all day and
whilst cold it was pleasant in the sun. As the shadows lengthened the
temperature started to drop to -6C and by the time it was dark all were feeling
the cold.
The piste was in superb condition, hard and smooth and as
the racing commenced it became clear that there would be few problems with ruts
or the course breaking up.
The race was designated a day/night slalom so first to run
were the FIS ladies, starting at 14.50. The courses were each set by different
coaches which resulted in a variety of challenges for both the male and female
athletes. The second run did not start until 17.20 and the race finished at
20.30. In view of the late hour the prize giving was delayed until Monday
afternoon.
All three winners in the ladies FIS race represented Switzerland with Charlotte Evans being the leading British competitor. The winners of the English Alpine Championships were as follows:
