English Alpine Championships 2009 – Bormio

                     

Sunday 15th February 2009  FIS Slalom

The day dawned clear and cold and looked a perfect day for racing. The mountains were standing out against a deep blue sky and conditions looked excellent for a day night slalom race. The sky stayed clear all day and whilst cold it was pleasant in the sun. As the shadows lengthened the temperature started to drop to -6C and by the time it was dark all were feeling the cold.

The piste was in superb condition, hard and smooth and as the racing commenced it became clear that there would be few problems with ruts or the course breaking up.

The race was designated a day/night slalom so first to run were the FIS ladies, starting at 14.50. The courses were each set by different coaches which resulted in a variety of challenges for both the male and female athletes. The second run did not start until 17.20 and the race finished at 20.30. In view of the late hour the prize giving was delayed until Monday afternoon.

All three winners in the ladies FIS race represented Switzerland with Charlotte Evans being the leading British competitor. The winners of the English Alpine Championships were as follows:
